Welcome to ERG! The Environmental Research Group is an undergraduate think tank devoted to interfacing science and social good to create sustainable change in Chicago through applicable, data-driven modeling.
This year we are partnering with Atutu, a non-profit dedicated to electrifying marginalized communities with solar micro-grids. We are also partnering with Chicago Alderpeople on the Chicago City Council Committee on Environment and Energy to support their legislative efforts.
ERG is made up of three teams: Data, Economics, and Policy. The policy team conducts qualitative research by reading academic literature and policy documents. The economics team uses modeling to understand the environmental issues and policies. The data team processes and analyses data to better understand and communicate environmental issues as well as to support environmental policy. Some examples of projects each team will be working on this year are:
Policy
Researching “last-mile communities” and why they are not electified.
Economics
Running a cost-benefit analysis for a new building code.
Modeling the economic costs of wildfires to city-wide consumer spending.
Data
Analyzing data to understand which buildings will be impacted by a new building code.
